Kapha is one of the three doshas that make up the core of Ayurveda. It is made up of water and earth elements and is associated with our bones and tissues.
Kapha enhances strength and stability in our bodies, and helps to lubricate our joints and nourish our cells. In addition to giving us physical strength, Kapha can provide us with a sense of emotional balance and mental clarity.
The spring season is considered a Kapha season because during this time of year, when temperatures are mild and the air is damp, Kapha is said to be in full swing. At this time, we tend to feel heavy and sluggish as our tissues absorb more water and accumulate more fat for insulation. As such, it’s important to be mindful of how to best balance Kapha in our bodies in order to maintain health and energy.
The best way to do this is by balancing opposing elements. In Ayurveda, opposites are thought to be able to balance each other out. As Kapha is cold and heavy, its opposite—which is warm and light—can be used to cancel out many of these undesirable effects of a kapha imbalance.
Kapha imbalances which can manifest in a number of ways, including loss of motivation, fatigue, mental fogginess, an overproduction of mucus, fluid retention, emotional overeating, and being easily attached or possessive.
One step to take is to introduce more movement into your daily life. Invite a friend or your partner to create an active lifestyle. A regular exercise routine, particularly one that involves activities that emphasize strength or cardiovascular endurance, are great options. This will help balance the heaviness and lethargy that characterizes Kapha energy.
Try going for early morning walks, as the morning air is often lighter and warmer than that of later hours in the day. Taking up yoga and other forms of exercise can also help you work off excess Kapha energy.
Eating warm and light foods can provide additional aid in managing your doshas. Try incorporating spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom, ginger, black pepper and cayenne pepper to your meals can add flavour while also providing a Kapha balancing boost. Additionally, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables can help tempt your taste buds away from heavier snacks.
It’s also important to peel back on heavy and oily foods, as well as cold, iced and carbonated drinks. Consider decreasing red meat and wine if digestion is feeling sluggish and if you’re feeling heavier with excess fluid retention.
